Preparation and Application

FAQ

Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

SURFACE PREPARATION:
1. Remove all loose paint, rust and dirt from areas to be undercoated with wire brush. Repair rust.
2. Clean the area to be sprayed with DSS Sure Solv (BSS / 10058) or a high quality wax and grease remover.
3. Rusted metal should be repaired and treated with DSS Rust remover (BROG / 10045).
4. Lightly scuff bare metal areas that are to be treated.

APPLICATION:
1. If application is in a tight area or if over-spray is a concern, mask areas not to be coated.
2. Application : shake can vigorously for at least 3 minutes. Keep gun/can 12–18 inches from area being sprayed and pressure at 50-60 psi if applying with Schutz type gun .
3. Apply 2 or 3 even coats for full coverage. Apply by moving steadily and evenly.
4. Allow each coat to flash off for 5-10 minutes between coats.
5. Overspray can be cleaned up with DSS Sure Solv (BSS / 10058).
6. For many applications, Gravel Guard needs no further finishing. Allow of at least 1 ½ – 2 hours dry time before painting. Gravel Guard needs to be thoroughly dry before painting.

Dry time may vary depending on film build, temperature and air flow. A thicker coating will take longer.

Q:  Should Gravel Guard be applied over bare metal or should the metal be primed?

A:  Gravel Guard should be applied over primed metal (etching primer or 2k epoxy primer is ideal) for optimal corrosion prevention.  Our One Step self  etching primer (SEP/SEP1) is a good choice, ensure to apply a light coat and allow it to fully flash all solvents before applying the Gravel Guard.

Q:  What is the coverage of  Gravel Guard?

A:  For the 830 mL can  (BVG1, BVG2, BVG3)  approximately 25 to 30 sq ft / can @ 10 mils applied wet film thickness (WFT)

For the 3.78L can (BVG11) approximately 110 to 130 sq ft / can @ 10 mils applied wet film thickness (WFT)

For the aerosol 550 g aerosol (SVG124, SVG3) it is 15 to 20 sq ft , 2 light to medium coats to achieve coverage

For the aerosol 405 g (SVG1, SVG2) ) it is 10 to 15 sq ft , 2 light to medium coats to achieve coverage

Q:   What is the maximum temperature Gravel Guard can sustain?

A:    Gravel Guard is not designed to be used on high heat surfaces such as exhaust systems, brake components or engine parts.  The maximum heat before degradation is about 70 degrees             celsius  or 17o degrees fahrenheit
